Sorry, Lefties And Never-Trumpers, But Mattis Quitting Isn’t A Crisis

Mattis Quits: The departure of Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis is being treated as an epic tragedy, a crisis, with some even suggesting President Trump should be impeached. Calm down. Mattis was, in our opinion, a great defense secretary. But Donald Trump is president.

It’s funny how unhinged the lefty-dominated media have become over Mattis’ departure. Even that bastion of foreign policy expertise, Rolling Stone, weighed in. They’ve all treated it as a crisis. It is no such thing.

As a basic reminder, Trump, like it or not, is ex officio the U.S. commander in chief. That means his decisions, for better or worse, are what matter when it comes to military engagement (of course, Congress has the ultimate power to declare war, but it has mostly relinquished that power to U.S. presidents of both parties).

Mattis was blunt in his resignation letter, not surprisingly, suggesting that he had too many policy disagreements to continue serving: “Because you have the right to have a secretary of defense whose views better align with yours … I believe it is right for me to step down from my position.”

In particular, the timing of Mattis’ resignation suggests a profound split with Trump over his decision to pull troops out of Syria. For the record, we mostly side with Mattis on this one. We think the departure of the U.S. from Syria will open it up to a lot of bad influences in the region: Russia, Turkey, Iran, ISIS, Saudi Arabia, and who knows who else. When good guys leave, bad guys fill the void.

Just remember what happened in Iraq. It was a nightmare when ISIS took over much of that country and threatened to metastasize across the region. President Obama’s abrupt decision to pull U.S. troops out was the cause of that.

And for the record, Mattis’ tenure was anything but short. By the end of February, by our count, he will have served roughly 769 days. That’s more than any of President Obama’s last three secretaries of defense. No one called for Obama’s resignation, despite his repeated overseas disasters.

Obama’s Spotty Record

Moreover, as we noted way, way back in 2013, Obama sacked some 197 long-serving U.S. military officers for reasons other than substandard performance. It was a political purge of the ranks of old-school, tough-as-nails military types. If there was a mainstream media piece about that extraordinary event, we’re not aware of it. But Mattis quitting? Impeachable.

As many others, we regret that Mattis is leaving. He’s a great American and an entirely admirable man, a role model for the military and for civilians alike for his service, patriotism and plain-spoken courage. But Trump was elected, Mattis wasn’t. And Syria — and so much else — is Trump’s call.
